February 2022 – THIS IS US Dare

 February’s Dare will deepen your emotional and spiritual connection with the wonderful man you married! Did you know that recalling your unique love story and how you two met, fell in love, and overcame obstacles will help you strengthen your friendship and nurture fondness and admiration for each other? (Check out the excellent and practical book The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work by Dr. John Gottman for more information.) Fanning the flames of respect and admiration for each other and what the two of you have created is sure to fan the flames of passion too—just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Supplies: Smart phone or recording device or paper and pen.

If you both enjoy writing, feel free to record your responses on paper, but the quickest way to complete this Dare is to record your responses as audios or videos on your phone.

Print out 2 copies of the questions below.

While in separate rooms, you and your husband each record your answers. Be sure to answer only one question per audio or video file so the file doesn’t get too large. You may want to give him the questions a couple of days in advance so he has time to remember.

Then, throughout February, share one file at a time with each other. It will be special to get a sweet or fun video from each other while one or both of you are at work (even if you are both working from home in the same room!). If your files are large, you might have to upload them to Google Drive or Dropbox and share a link instead.

We also found an inexpensive paperback couple’s journal called Questions for Couples: A Journal which has 365 questions to encourage meaningful conversations. There’s space for each of you to jot down your answers so you two can create a meaningful keepsake to enjoy for years.

And if you need a collapsible tripod with wireless remote that is sturdy enough to hold a camera but also has a phone holder, here’s a good one.

BONUS AT HOME DATE IDEA! The hit NBC television show This is Us is coming to an end soon. Watching or rewatching this series can lead to meaningful and thought-provoking conversations with your husband. When it first began airing, Dr. Jennifer had multiple counseling clients mention how watching This Is Us together stirred up interesting conversations about relationships, childhood experiences, and marriage. Please note that the way characters think about and handle situations doesn’t always line up with biblical principles.
